Thanks to our PTO funded residency program, Dar Hosta will visit 1st graders at Community Park Elementary School on January 21st, 22nd and 23rd  as their resident Author/Illustrator.  For three days, Dar Hosta spends time showing the first graders how she makes her beautiful books.   She takes them through the entire writing and illustrating  process of making a 32 page picture book. The students then work on making painted paper for their collages. They pick an animal to illustrate and use the first letter of the animal name to brainstorm lists of words in categories (nouns, verbs and adjectives) beginning with that letter to make an alliterative sentence for their collage.  She shows the students how they can find nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a dictionary that can help them create a complex sentence. The students then use the sentence details to sketch out an illustration for their collage.  They search through the gorgeous painted paper they created to cut out shapes to make their animal and the background details for their collage. Then they begin gluing their art on colored cardstock.  The sentences and illustrations match beautifully.   We feel fortunate to have such a wonderful resource in our community.   Dar Hosta also works at the Arts Council of Princeton teaching writing and art classes.
